Due to the present blue tongue movement restrictions, the annual autumn Lleyn Sheep Society sale became a two centre sale when Harrison & Hetherington Limited held events at Lockerbie and Carlisle.


Top Price Ram at Lockerbie Mart selling for 6,000gns
shown by Farmstock Genetics, Selkirk.

Topping the sale was a shearling ram shown at the Lockerbie market by Farmstock Genetics of Over Whitlaw Farm, Selkirk. Whitlaw Lad, a geno type one twin born ram sold for 6,000gns to Perthshire breeder Neil McGowan of Inchoech Farm.

Following at 4,000gns was another shearling ram consigned by Ayrshire breeder David Alexander of Galston. His ARR/ARR born twin shearling attracted the eye of Fellow Scottish breeders W & N Lawrence of Blackpotts, Aberdeenshire.

Leading the female section at Lockerbie, was a pen shearling gimmers from Derek Steen of Whitcastles, Lockerbie which sold for £125 per head and go to E Jones of Machymlleth, Powys.

Two other lots of shearling gimmers from Derek Steen both sold for £100 each and both pens also selling to E Jones of Powys.


Top Price Ram at Carlisle Mart selling for 3,800gns

Back at the Carlisle centre, the leading price tag of the sale was a shearling ram selling for 3,800gns. Consigned by Welsh breeders DN Bennett & Son of Meifod, Powys, this eye catching ARR/ARR shearling was knocked down to Derek Steen of Whitcastles to join his Whitlaw flock based at Lockerbie.

The next highest price in the ram section was 2,000gns for a shearling shown by Dumfriesshire breeder Hamish Goldie of South Bowerhouses. He was successfully sold to Messrs Bulman & Marley of Milehouse, Northallerton.

In the female classes £150 was the joint top price of the sale at Carlisle. The first pen was shearling gimmers shown by Yorkshire breeder Simon Kavanagh of Edlwick, Bingley and was purchased by Messrs of Bulaman & Marley of Northallerton.

Also selling for £150 was another pen of shearling gimmers from local breeder John Page of Edenhall, Penrith, and these were sold to SW Boow of Corney Hall, Millom.
Close behind at £140 was another pen shown by Simon Kavanagh of Eldwick. This pen sold to J Bownass of Field Gate, Giggleswick, Settle.

Averages –

Lockerbie Mart – 291shearling gimmers £81.29, 10 ewe lambs £44.00, 27 shearling rams £978.45.

Carlisle Mart – 49 ewes £49.29, 949 shearling gimmers £75.16, 212 ewe lambs £50.29, 53 shearling rams £466.75, 1 aged rams £735.00.
