The Farm
Cragg Farm is situated in the village of New Hutton, 4 miles from Kendal.
The family farm is run by Peter and David Knowles and extends to some 120 Ha, all within the less favored area, all the land is farmed within the Lake District Environmentally Sensitive Area scheme.
The farm carries 160 head of cattle, the Kendalcragg Pedigree Holstein Dairy herd, and all followers, and some beef stores and breeding heifers.
The sheep enterprise consists of 420 Lleyn sheep, all being pedigree & MV Accredited & in the NSP scheme. The farm is
FABBL Farm Assured. The farm produces genuine breeding stock which usually go on to do well for there new owners.

Show Success
We have shown our sheep at the Westmorland County Show for 3 years and have had some success
Achieving Champion in the 2001 show with our shearling ram.

Lleyns ewes were introduced to Cragg Farm in 1994
to replace the traditional horned ewes. It was felt that these ewes were not breeding the quality of lamb that was required for the market. The Lleyns seemed to offer all the attributes that is required for a breeding ewe. We have been impressed by the nature of the ewes and their quiet temperament, their hardiness, ability to milk and rear 2 good lambs.We now rear all our own replacements with any
surplus been sold.

Our System
We lamb 420 pure ewes in late March & April the majority being sire by our Stock Rams.
All wether lambs are finished on the farm and sold at around 40-42kg in the local market (usually) 30-40 Gimmer Lambs are retained and tupped the remainder being sold at society sales.We also retain a selection of Ram Lambs, to sell as shearlings, several are used as lambs to serve a small number of ewes.
