North & East Club 2010

The North & East Club has had a very busy year. We were invited to help man the Society stand at North Sheep in early June, then a number of us joined the Society’s visit to Duchy Home Farm in Gloucestershire, where we were able to a see a Royal example of sustainable farming at first hand.

We then attended a meeting at John Bell’s farm where we learned about some of the different methods of using electronic identification.

Alison with the Champion Lleyn at the Lincolnshire Show 09

A revamped show stand was taken to the Lincolnshire Show, the Driffield Show in East Yorkshire, and both the Malton Show and Ryedale Show in North Yorkshire. Members of the group were also in attendance at the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate on all three days.

The North and East of England Club held Lleyn classes for the first time in 2009 at the Lincolnshire Show. This is a large traditional agricultural show and we were blessed with beautiful weather. Our members provided a splendid display of 26 animals which were a credit to the breed and a reflection of the hard work put in by everyone.

The Champion animal, a magnificent adult ewe, together with the Reserve Champion adult ram both from Alison Moody & Tony Wheldon, took the eye of our Judge, Mr Dennis Ison.
Alison and Tony took the Championship and the North & East Club Cup at Driffield Show with a splendid ewe which did the breed proud. Congratulations also go to Colin Bray, Peter Lakeman, Christine Thompson, Riseholme College, Mr Radford and Tom Mawer for their successes at the Lincolnshire Show, and to Colin Bray and Peter Lakeman for their success at the Driffield Show

Colin Bray at Driffield Show 09

Congratulations also go to Alison & Tony for winning the Champion female prize at the Great Yorkshire and also to Alan Waldron for winning the Reserve Champion male prize.
Congratulations go to our Chairman and wife, Graham and Mandy Fort, on winning the second annual Flock Competition. They were presented with the “Barnard Silver Cup” and Champion rosette by Linda at the Club’s AGM in October. David and Christine Thompson came second with Martin Stone third. The Judge, Dr Tim Riley, gave a brief account of the merits of each flock and said he had had a very enjoyable time visiting each flock.

The North & East Club sponsored the annual pre-sale show in Skipton. The Champion pen of five ewe lambs came from Brian Walling. The Reserve Champion pen of five shearling ewes came from David & Jennifer Alexander, and later went on to sell at £152 to Club members Andrew & Louise Hodsman. The first prize shearling ram came from Jim Goldie which went on to sell for 920gns to Club members Mark & Steph Shields, and the second prize shearling ram came from Graham & Mandy Fort, which later went on to top the sale at 1300gns and sold to

We welcome all Lleyn breeders and those with an interest in the breed to any of our forthcoming events. For more information contact Linda Barnard, Secretary on 01653 698580 or e-mail LindaBarnard958@btinternet.com.
