FOOT AND MOUTH, Bluetongue and floods are, sadly, what many of us will remember 2007 for. Sales and shows disrupted were for most of us the worst part of the problems. However, one of our members, Peter Vickerton (Flock
1008) assures us that Lleyn appear to be strong swimmers as a result of his experience of pulling 300 ewes and
lambs out of floods, with only 2 lambs lost! On a happier note, our retiring Chairman Robin Gaunt (Flock 734) and his family hosted an Open Day in July 2007 at their farm near Wetherby. Although it poured down with rain all day, the spirit of the group was not dampened. We saw some splendid Lleyn shearling ewes alongside some equally splendid
Charollais cross shearlings and the stock rams. We had advertised a session on preparing sheep for shows and sales. New member Louise Hobson (Flock 1752) was anxious to try her hand at preparing one of the shearling ewes for show, and we all watched as she did a perfect job following guidance from the rest of us. In addition to the sheep enterprises, the farm has been enthusiastic in diversification. Converted farm buildings have been made into fully equipped teaching workshops for the use of children from Leeds and surrounding districts. Here the children are able to take part in courses in woodworking, tractor mechanics, horticulture, cookery and art & media. We also saw the new fishing lakes which were being used as part of a new qualification in ‘Fishing and the Environment’. In addition, a
high-tech biomass fuel system had recently been installed, which was rather more technology than some of us could get our heads round! The final diversification we saw was the on site catering facility which had prepared a splendid lunch for us. We all had a thoroughly enjoyable and educational day.
In 2008 the Club is introducing a new flock competition which we hope will be attractive to a large number of members, and we are looking forward to presenting a new cup (full of sheep nuts?) to the
winning flock. The other North & East Cup for which Club members can compete is the one presented at the Driffield show. The Club would like to congratulate Christine Thompson on her election as Vice Chair of the Society and wishes her all the best during her term of office. At our AGM in October, our new Chairman, Mr Graham Fort from Keighley (Flock 1299) took up the reins, Linda Barnard remaining as secretary and Shirley Daniel remaining as Treasurer. We welcome all Lleyn breeders and those with an interest in the breed to any of our forthcoming events
