Lleyn cross Suffolk lambs

Crowds flocked to Graham & Mandy Fort and family's Open Day at Brighton
House Farm, Steeton, Keighley on Sunday 17 August. This was an opportunity
to see some 800 Lleyns and 200 Suffolks thriving on a Yorkshire hill farm.

Lleyn Rams

The highlight of the day was the comparison of a pure bred Lleyn lamb
carcass with that of a Suffolk cross Lleyn carcass, first on the hook and
then ably cut up by butcher Paul Nicholson from Malton. This clearly
demonstrated the benefits of choosing the Lleyn  in commercial prime lamb
production.

Cutting up Lleyn carcases

The Lleyn breed is becoming well known for its prolificacy, mothering
ability, economical grazing and the ability to produce both pure and cross
bred prime lambs. The breed originates from the Lleyn peninsula in North
Wales and in the 1960s was a rare breed heading towards possible extinction.
