LLEYN SHEARLINGS AVERAGE ALMOST £84 AT PERTH BUT ENTRIES HIT BY INDUSTRY PROBLEMS

Entries in all sections of the breed society’s sale at Perth were well down but shearling gimmers averaged almost £84 and ewe lambs just over £43. In line with the continuing unsettled state of the sheep sector the demand for rams was very selective with prices reaching 600gns.
Many breeders took the decision not to bring sheep to the sale which meant only a fifth of the entry of shearling gimmers was forward. Earning the top price of £120 for a pen of five was Ayrshire vet David Alexander selling to Hugh Gillan who is establishing a new flock of 400 ewes near St Andrews.
“I’ve recently moved to this farm and Lleyns were suggested to me as the ideal sheep for an organic system. I’ve been very pleased with how easy they are to manage and how docile they are so I’ve decided to switch my entire flock over to Lleyns,” said Mr Gillan.
Gimmers from the Goldie family’s flock at Dumfries accounted for a run of the day’s better prices with pens making £95, £85 and £80.
It was a similar story in the ewe lamb section with the depleted entry levelling at £43.25. The Geldard family from Levens, Cumbria topped the lambs at £55 for a pen claimed by W Murdock, Halkirk, Caithness.
Another pen from the Geldard consignment realised £48. This bid was matched by organic shearlings offered by Farmstock Genetics, Selkirk while Willie Davidson, Moffat achieved a best of £40.
A shearling ram from Laga Farms, Evie, Orkney proved to be one of the ringside favourites and realised 600gns to Orkney buyers Messrs Cursitor and another shearling from the same flock made 500gns. David Alexander sold a shearling at 600gns as a stock tup to Hugh Gillan. A shearling from the Goldie family changed hands at 400gns
