SHEARLING GIMMERS TOP RUTHIN LLEYN SALE AT £122

October 6th 2007

It’s been a difficult week for sheep farmers as the first of the delayed sales of breeding lambs and ewes hit the market and while the underlying trend remains cautious the Lleyn Sheep Society’s sale at Ruthin produced a top price of £150 for ewe lambs.

The day’s most fancied pen came from the successful flock of breed society chairman Dai Morris and his wife Cynthia from St Clears, Carmarthen. They realised £150 to Preston, Lancashire buyer D Davies.

Averages were inevitably down in all sections but the long journey south for Jim Goldie earned him the day’s best return when gimmers from his flock at Mouswald,, Dumfries reached £122 to north Wales buyer J Osborne, Glan Conwy, Conway.

Aged ewes peaked at £54 for entries from B S Williams, Ruthin and taken by D and C Williams.

Ram trade was selective with the top call of 1000gns coming for a shearling consigned by E and D Jones, Machynlleth, Powys and secured by Marcus Bullock, Abberley, Worcester. Among the day’s leading ram bids was 820gns paid by I O Jones, Cefn Treflaeth and 850gns from Yorkshire buyer Christine Thompson. Both were consigned by Dai and Cynthia Morris.

Averages: Aged ewes £44.45; ewe lambs £42.11; shearling gimmers £55.25 and rams £319.55.
