Total Clearance at Ruthin Lleyn Sheep Sale

The Lleyn Sheep Society Sale at Ruthin has been hailed a tremendous success after a total clearance of all 2173 females forward on the day. The ringside was busy and bidding firm, seeing 1192 Maedi-Visna Accredited yearlings average £117.75, up £42.75 on the year. All classes of females saw excellent trade, from five-year-old ewes to ewe lambs, and the overall average for females was £101.82.

Entries for the show before the sale were well subscribed, with 30 pens of females and 30 rams presented. The Judge, Lleyn Sheep Society President Nia Williams of Tyddyn Fadog, Benllech, Anglesey, awarded the Champion Ram to T & B Fort, Brighton House Farm, Steeton, West Yorkshire, which went on to sell for 950gns to A Akrigg, Craven Game Farm, Kelbrook.

Equal top price shearlings from E & D Jones

The Champion Females, a superb pen of five yearling ewes, came from the hosts of NSA Welsh Sheep 2009 D W Ellis, Cernioge Bach, Pentrefoelas, Conwy. These later topped the market at £155 per head, and are heading to Lincolnshire to join a new pedigree Lleyn flock with SA & VJ Elwess, Manor Farm, Gainsborough.

Also hitting the high spot at £155 was a pen of ten very strong yearling ewes from E & D Jones, Lluest Wen, Machynlleth, selling to PR Sharp, Ddanfford Gar Farm, Pontarsais, Carmarthen .

Champion Ram From  T & B Fort

Ram trade was solid, averaging 530gns, with only one ram not sold through the ring. The top seller was a yearling from Scottish vendor H Goldie, South Bowerhouses , Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire, which fetched 2000gns. Descended from T184 and by Z110, a C Sackville Hamilton ram, this performance-recorded yearling is in the top 1% of the Lleyn breed. He is being consigned to new breeder R J Steen, Drumore, Banbridge, County Down in Northern Ireland .

E & D Jones, Lluest Wen, top sellers at Ross-on-Wye Lleyn Sheep Society Sale the previous week, were narrowly pipped to the post with a 1900gns yearling selling to H & M Dugdale & Son, Borrins Farm, Settle, North Yorkshire.
