This year we are heading for Carmarthenshire to the flock of Richard & Jennifer Twose and family, winners of the Wolfscastle Lleyn Cup for Best Ewe Lambs in last year’s flock competition.
Maenhir is a family run farm totalling 575 acres in 7 blocks. The main enterprise is an autumn calving herd of 400 pedigree Holsteins and around 200 heifers. They run 220 pedigree Lleyn ewes, 140 ewe lambs and 20 ram lambs, normally lambing half of the ewe lambs. They sell ewe lambs at Society sales along with around 20 shearling tups.Â
We will meet at 11am at Maenhir for coffee and cake with a chance to look around the yard at Maenhir including the milking parlour, the start of the new calf shed and the calves, of which there should be at least 130. The calves are a mix of Blues, Angus, and Herefords which are reared to strong weanlings, to boost cash flow, as well as heifer calf replacements.
After this we will go on a farm tour and see the silage and wheat crops and, of course, the sheep and how the sheep enterprise of 220 ewes (going to increase numbers for the next 2 years) fits in with a busy family run dairy farm.Â
After we return from the tour dinner will be provided and we will have a chance to go through the yearling Rams and, of course, the winning ewe lambs from last year’s flock competition. We will also see "BraveHeart", and a selection of his progeny, as this ram has worked so well for the Twose family.
As well as the dairy herd and the Lleyn flock we will see the new herd of 5  Pedigree Herefords, the 150 in calf/ bulling heifers , the 100 kilowatt wind turbine and the 50 kilowatt solar array and Milk transfer depot.
For those travelling from the east (wise men!!) take the A40 west of Whitland towards Haverfordwest. At Penblewin roundabout take the A478 towards Cardigan travelling 7 miles through the villages of Clynderwen, Llandissilio and Efailwen. At the Glandy Cross petrol station turn right beside the petrol station, after half a mile there is a T junction with stables in front of you, turn right and after 100 yards take a left turn for Login. Maenhir is the first farm on the left after you’ve passed the wind turbine.Â
From the North take the A 478 at Cardigan towards Tenby travelling through Crymych. 7 miles south of Crymych turn left down beside Glandy Cross petrol station and follow instructions as above.
Take a look at the map before setting off as "Sat nav" will take you very much "cross country”. The post code is SA34 0XE.
If you would like to attend could you please let me know by email, text or phone by the 10th August.
All Welcome. Croeso i bawb.
