Sunday 29th August
Mr & Mrs Gwyn Anthony and family (Flock 91) at Haregrove Farm in Bridgend
This year we are visiting the renowned flock of Mr & Mrs Gwyn Anthony and family (Flock 91) at Haregrove Farm in Bridgend. The date is Sunday the 29th June. Gwyn and Ann Anthony together with their sons Phillip and John, and a staff of four, farm almost 900 acres of land.
They have a total of 800 sheep of which 500 are pedigree Lleyn sheep with 250 Lleyn yearling ewes and a small flock of Charollais.
In April 2007 they began milking in their new 40 *40 herringbone parlour. This was a complete new set up built on a green field site that includes the parlour, housing for the herd, silage storage plus an innovative channel for the slurry. Running under the shed, it leads directly to a dedicated pit capable of holding up to 1.2 million gallons. The pedigree Holstein herd was closed from 1963 to 2007 but a herd was bought from Hull to take the number of dairy cattle up to 500.
They also have a bull beef unit rearing the Holstein bulls and cross breds up to 13-14 months before selling.
They grow 64 acres of winter barley and 86 acres of spring wheat that is crimped for feed along with 170 acres of maize. A further 70 acres of maize is grown for them on a local estate.
DAY PLAN
The day will begin at Haregrove farm at 11am. This will give us the opportunity to see the new dairy unit, the bull beef, and take a trailer ride through the farm to see the arable crops.
We will then travel to the Grove Golf club for lunch.
After lunch we will go to St Mary Hill to see the Lleyn flock and 80 in calf heifers. This will then be followed by a return visit to Haregrove to end the day.
DIRECTIONS
To get to Haregrove you take junction 37 off the M4 heading towards Pyle. At the next roundabout you take the third exit onto the A48 towards Bridgend.
In less than 1 mile and as the dual carriageway begins there is a stone bus shelter.40-50 yards past this shelter you turn left and carry on for ¾ of a mile through common land. As you come into the hollow the farm is on the left with farm buildings right up to the road
