South Wales Club Open Day
Sunday 4th July at Neil & Lynda Perkins, Dinas Island Farm, Newport, Pembrokeshire
Recongnised for its grassland managment system & demo farm for meat promotion Wales from 06-09. Home of the NFU Cymru Welsh Woman of the Year

Neil & Lynda Perkins and family live on Dinas Island Farm on the Pembrokeshire Coast. They have 1500 ewes, of which 800 are pure Lleyn sheep. The other 700 are a mixed flock of mules and Suffolk cross mules. They bought their first Lleyn ewes in 2006 and are gradually turning the flock to be entirely Lleyn. To achieve this they are using a pedigree ram on all the Lleyn ewes and retaining the best ewe lambs.

The ewes’ lamb towards the beginning of April and lambs are sold from the end of June to December. All the lambs are finished on grass without the use of any concentrates.

In addition to this they are contract rearing dairy heifers for a local farmer. They currently have approximately 300 heifers up to 12 months in age, but are aiming for 350. The heifers are reared using computerised calf rearing system.

The farm is 600 acres in total with 400 acres of productive grass with the other 200 acres comprising of environmental areas such as woodland and wetlands. Although the farm is not farmed organically, many organic principles are followed to ensure maximum results form the land available.
