Thainstone Lleyn sale report

The inaugural Thainstone Lleyn sale was held on the 12th September. The sale attracted a steady commercial trade with a healthy contingent of local buyers. Trade became suppressed as the news of the latest Foot and Mouth outbreak was released and rams met with a sticky trade.

The show was well attended with judge Michael Cursiter, Laga Farms, Orkney commenting that the Champions were fine examples of the Lleyn breed. He presented the Allflex Male Champion Trophy to James Goldie, Townfoot, Mouswald. The ram later took the top price of 480gns and was purchased by Adamston Farms, Huntly who are going to turn him out with Mule ewes to breed their own replacements.

Female trade topped at £110 for a pen of 5 classy 1st prize gimmers from Hamish Goldie, Townfoot, Mouswald. These were purchased by Duncan Connon, Broadmyre, Clatt, Huntly. This was the Connon’s first venture in Lleyn Females having used Lleyn rams as maternal sires on Cheviot ewes for the past five years. Taking £108 for the 2nd prize pen of gimmers was David Alexander, Millside, Galston, Ayrshire. They were purchased by N R Pottie, Easter Dalziel, Dalcross, Inverness, the gimmers will be crossed with a Texel to breed cross bred replacements. It was a good day for local breeder and Lleyn stalwart Norman Lawrence, Blackpots, Auchnagatt who sold 50 gimmers to average £98.

Taking the Allflex Female Championship was Hamish Goldie with an outstanding pen of five ewe lambs; they were purchased by L & E Fowlie, Guise, Tough, Alford for £80.
