AGM Weekend 2014 ~ Aberystwyth, South Wales
Friday 24th – Sunday 26th October
Members travelled far and wide, with members from North Scotland, North England, Lincolnshire, Southern England, the West Country, North Wales, South Wales, Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland. This shows the growing popularity of this annual event.
The weekend kicked off on Friday evening for the Council Members with a Council Meeting. Other members continued to arrive with some taking advantage of the time to explore Aberystwyth, some made the most of the sea air and went for a stroll along the sea front and Promenade whilst others chose to enjoy the hotel facilities at the Marine Hotel.
Saturday morning saw the group hot foot across town to the railway station to board the little steam train which takes you up the Vale of Rheidol to Devils Bridge. We saw some beautiful scenery with the autumn colours of the trees framing some lovely countryside. Once at Devils Bridge the group was assembled for a photo with the steam engine before boarding the two coaches.
A quick stop back at the hotel, with some extra members joining for the afternoon trip. First stop was the idyllic town of Aberaeron where lunch was on the menu. On from there to the Fronarth Stud. Here members were shown some outstanding Welsh Cobs by the Jones family. The family also showed the group their Kerry Hill and Suffolk Sheep flocks. The group were very lucky to see three 2014 Royal Welsh Show Champions. This visit was rounded off by some fantastic home baked cakes and a cup of tea.
Once back at the hotel members had time for a quick change before it was time for the Annual General Meeting. With an outstanding turnout of over 70 members it all ran smoothly with trophy presentations also being made. Alun Bennett collected the Roseland cup from Gill Adams on behalf of Robert Bennett. Meurig Williams collected the Noel Baseley Memorial Show Points Trophy from Mrs Pat Baseley on behalf of Wynne Davies. Dewi Ellis was presented with the Mole Valley Vouchers for his champion and reserve champion photo in the photo competition. As retiring treasurer Dai Morris was presented with some garden centre vouchers by Chairman David Knowles.
The Annual Dinner was held in the Main Dining Room at the Marine Hotel. With 95 members to feed the hotel did a fantastic job of catering for everyone’s needs. Gwynne Davies then rounded things off with some humour whilst also updating on the activities at the Royal Welsh Show Agricultural Society. The clocks were turned back at 2pm with some choosing an extra hour in bed whilst other made use of it in the bar. There was a very relaxed and social atmosphere throughout the whole event.
Sunday morning took things to Machynlleth to the Lluest Wen Lleyn Flock which was kindly hosted by the Jones Family. Dylan, Anwen, Emrys & Glenys put on a fantastic display of Lleyn sheep with members seeing a very high standard of ewes, ewe lambs and rams. The family very kindly put on a lunch for everyone with the best of Welsh produce on offer. This was very gratefully received before everyone set off for their journeys home to the many corners of the UK and Ireland.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped to make this weekend a success.
