Celebrating 50 Years of the Lleyn Sheep Society in 2020

Lleyn Sheep Society

Sale at Exeter - Thursday 28th August 2014

Fantastic Clearance Rates for the first Society Sale of the 2014 Season

There was a very positive mood prior to this year’s sale and this followed through with some firm results.  The sale remained level with a consistent trade throughout.  All section averages are up considerably on 2013; Aged Ewes +£33, Shearling Ewes +£42, Ewe Lambs +£24 and Rams +£116.  Up to date harvests, better grass growth throughout the summer added to a positive cull ewe trade are some of the factors believed to have helped this year’s confident trade at Exeter.

The Aged Ewe section set off strong with 100% clearance.  Cathy & David Evans, Modbury sold their two year olds for £124/head to J Cane, Bishopsteignton.  The Evans sold a further pen of two year olds for £115/head to C Helyar, Taunton.  Mike Young, Liskeard sold his two year olds for £118/head to STJ Turner, Crediton.

The shearling ewes followed.  Arfon Hughes topped the section.  His second prize pen which included the second prize individual ewe sold for the day’s female top price of £208/head to Highgate Farm Partnership, Cornwall.  T & B Fort, Keighley sold a pen for £178/head to MH Miller, Milton Abbas.  Robert Bennett sold a pen at £175/head to Highgate Farm Partnership he then sold further pens at £174 x 2 and £172.

The non MVA section also proved productive with all the shearling ewes presented being sold.  Miss C Barker, Romsey sold both of her pens of 9 ewes for £155/head and £160/head to RC Gubb, Torrington.  RHS Turner, Honiton sold a pen for £150/head to S Pierson, Kent.

The ewe lambs saw a 100% clearance.  JM & GC Adams, Truro topped the section when selling a pen of five for £130/head to S Pierson, Kent.  The first prize pen from WJ & DJ Williams, Nefyn sold for £128/head to SP Gubbin & Son, Cornwall.  AW Davies sold the 2nd prize pen for £124/head to Davie Farm Partnership, Shobrooke.  ST Morris, Hereford sold a pen of 20 for £123/head to R & C May, Ivybridge.

The ram section saw three rams sell for over 1000gns.  First to hit the mark was G & A Fort, Keighley with lot 13 which had been 4th in the pre sale show.  Bred from a HM Dugdale & Son sire and out of a homebred ewe this shearling ram sold for 1200gns to Sandley Farm Partnership, Gillingham.  Robert Bennett, Powys was next to realise 1200gns when selling lot 41 a Laga Farms sired shearling ram from a homebred ewe.  He was bought over the phone by H Goldie, Dumfrisshire.  T & B Fort sold lot 40, a J Goldie sired ram for 1100gns to R Branton, Uplowman.  The champion ram from AW Davies, Nefyn sold for 920gns to C Alderman, Cornwall
