Celebrating 50 Years of the Lleyn Sheep Society in 2020

Lleyn Sheep Society

Annual Sale at Welshpool Market ‚Äď Saturday 27th September 2014

A busy market led to a busy sale with prices solid and clearance rates high.

The averages at today’s sale were in-line with most other sales this year even though many of the sheep shown are now from second, third or even forth draws.  Shearling ewes were easily sold with good money been paid for quality sheep with strong characteristics and tight skins.   There was some smaller ewe lambs, often late born forward today although the potential for growth was seen by the buyers.

DN Bennett & Son, Powys topped the shearling ewes with a pen of five sold for £295/head to DW & CF Morris, Carmarthen.  The Bennett family sold their next pen of seven shearling ewes for £270/head to J Shipton, Dorset.  The first prize pen which was also awarded champion females today from JA & R Geldard, & Sons, Kendal sold for £260/head to J Shipton, Dorset.  There was eight pens in this section that realised £200/head and above.

The trade continued into the ewe lambs with J Morton, Penrith topping at £140/head with the third prize pen to C Jenkins, Ceredigion.  Mr Morton sold his next pen at £120/head to P & S Eckett, Dorset.  The first prize pen from DH & GA Watkins, Herford sold for £120/head to J Coles, Bodmin.  AW Davies, Pwllheli also sold his pen for £120/head to AD Jones, Oswestry.

The commercial sheep were also in demand with shearling ewes being sold for £125 to £180.  Ewe lambs were very dependent on size being sold for £75 to £90 for many running lamb types.

Travelling all the way from Scotland JK Goldie, Dumfries topped the ram section with Lochar Contender when selling him for 2500gn to T Riley, Chorley.  Contender is sired by Lluest Nobleman a E & D Jones ram, out of a homebred ewe.  E & D Jones, Machynlleth sold a Lluest shearling ram, sired by Wraycastle Warrior, a JA & R Geldard ram.  He was out of a homebred ewe.  This ram joins the flock of Simon Kananagh at Skipton.  The champion ram from JA & R Geldard & Sons, Kendal , a Wraycastle ram sold for 1500gns to H & M Dugdale, Settle.  This ram was sired by a Walling sire.

Also at 1500gns was the first ram into the ring from the Orchard Lleyn flock of H Goldie, Dumfries.  A substitute to the sale Plasucha Bennetts Pride, a 2012 born ram sired by a J Morton ram.  He joins J2 Farming, Oswestry.
