Celebrating 50 Years of the Lleyn Sheep Society in 2020

Lleyn Sheep Society – Annual sale at Carlisle Mart – Thursday 22nd September 2016

There were many return buyers as well as many new ones looking for females this year.  Shearling ewes saw a strong commercial demand this included purchasers looking for MVA ewes to carry embryos.  With some hold ups on the roads buyers who arrived late were keen to purchase sheep down the pens which had earlier been passed through the ring.  Ewe lambs saw demand for tupping lambs whilst running lambs were harder to place.  Rams enjoyed a very sound trade with a high clearance rate, the average of the section £132 up on the year.

The pens of shearling ewes first saw a top of £250/head through the ring by JF Robinson & Sons, Shropshire for a pen of five which sold to C & A Kennedy, County Antrim.  JA & R Geldard & Sons, Kendal sold a pen of 10 for £190/head to L Scanlon, Biggar.  Later Hamish Goldie, Dumfries secured a price of £300/head outside the ring for the first prize pen of five plus his individual shearling ewe entry (6 ewes in total) when selling to Stuart Galloway, Newton Stewart.  C & A Kennedy also secured a sale outside the ring, they obtained £290/head for their pen of five to Ashton Selway, Dorset.

There was a class for an individual shearling ewe.  The second prize ewe from JK Goldie, Dumfries sold for £500 to Clive Long, County Tyrone.  The first prize ewe from JA & R Geldard & Sons sold for £400 to John Kingan, Dumfries.  The third prize ewe from David Alexander, Ayrshire sold for £200 to Robert Johnston & Sons, Falkirk.

For the second year in a row, B Walling – Farmstock Genetics, Selkirk sold the top priced pen of ewe lambs.  The pen of five had earlier been awarded first prize in the show.  They sold for £230/head to Mike Kinnes, Driffield.  Lionel Organ, Carmarthen sold a pen of five for £170/head to D Thompson, Robin Hoods Bay.  Linda Jenkinson, Kirkby Stephen sold a pen for £160/head to MJ Fell Ltd, Whittington.  John Morton, Penrith also sold a pen for £160/head to R Mitchell & Sons, Hawick.

The top price ram, Whitlaw Europe came from the pen of B Walling – Farmstock Genetics.  Sired by Incheoch Mojo a Debbie McGowan ram, he had won the breed championship at the Great Yorkshire Show earlier in the summer.  He sold for 7000gns to Michael Cursiter of Laga Farms, Orkney.  Next came from Hamish Goldie, Lochar Extract by Plasucha Chief.  He was purchased by Derek Steen, Lockerbie for 4500gns.  DN Bennett & Sons sold Plasucha Elroy for 4000gns M Cursiter, Laga Farms.  This ram was sired by Lochar Conquest.

There were two rams which realised the 3000gns mark.  First David Knowles, Kendal sold a Cragg ram by a Williams sire to HM Dugdale & Sons, Settle.  Messrs Dugdale then sold Borrins Emperor by a Knowles ram to W & N Lawrence, Aberdeen.
