Celebrating 50 Years of the Lleyn Sheep Society in 2020

Lleyn Sheep Society

Annual Show & Sale of Lleyn Sheep at Exeter Livestock Market

There was a positive turnout of buyers, particularly those looking for sheep to put into a commercial flock.  As well as the buyers from Devon, there was also representation from Cornwall, Somerset and South Wales.

The older ewe trade started the day firm.  Gill & John Adams, Truro topped the section when selling two years olds to T Inch, Bude for £132/head.  Next Mrs SP Sayers, Plymouth who was selling her stock today as a dispersal sold three year olds for £128/head to Harpers Holdings, Holsworthy.  STJ Turner, Crediton sold two year olds for £122/head to RA Hughes, Angelsey.

The pens of MVA shearling ewes section was topped by WJ & DJ Williams, Pwllheli who sold the third prize for £192/head to PCJ Farming, Camborne.  Next was the champion pen of five from JF Robinson & Sons, Church Stretton who sold for £168/head to Highgate Farm Partnership, Lostwithiel.  The long journey for T & B Fort, Keighley saw them sell a pen of 5 shearling ewes for £158/head also to Highgate Farm Partnership.

In the Non-MVA section the buyers held on to make it 100% clearance.  RHS Turner, Honiton sold for £140/head to P Douglas, Wiltshire.  He sold another pen for £138/head to S King, Ilchester.

Once again there was a class for individual shearling ewe, when sold separately the first prize ewe from Arfon Hughes, Gwynedd sold for £240 to William Hunt, Honiton.  The second prize ewe from WJ & DJ Williams sold for £200 to PCJ Farming, Camborne.

With an average of £132/head the shearling ewe section saw many ewes been bought for £125 - £140/head.  Many of which were been bought by buyers who wanted numbers for commercial flocks.

Ewe lambs saw a buoyant trade with the firm prime lamb prices considered the reason for putting a bottom in the market.  Colin Price, Brecon topped the section with his 1st prize pen which sold for £125/head to J & W Grigg, Launceston.  Next to top was M Young, Liskeard with his third prize pen which realised £122/head to SP Gubbin & Son, Launceston.  A poignant moment for Peter Honey as he sold the final pen of females from SP Sayers flock for £120/head also to SP Gubbin.  Tupping lambs were easily making £95 with eight pens realising over £100.  Running lambs were £75 and above depending on size and skins, many pens realised £80-£86/head.

The ram section saw three rams reach the 1000gns mark or more.  It had been noted that one of two repeat buyers were missing this year as they had commented that their Lleyn rams previously bought at this sale were lasting hence they did not need any replacements this year – good to hear the rams have longevity.  Firstly Richard & Jennifer Twose lot 30, this ram had not been included in the show as Richard had been the judge.  This Maenhir ram is sired by Lochar Brave Heart, a Goldie ram.  He sold for 1250gns to AJ & K Stephens, Callington.

The champion ram from Paul & Sarah Eckett, Sturminster Newton was by a Geldard ram, out of a homebred show ewe.  He sold for 1000gns to Foxwood Farm, Salsbury.  SP Sayers, Plymouth sold Carswell Edward sired by a homebred ram for 1000gns to R Flenley, Stickle Path.
