Lleyn Sheep Sheep Society - Ross on Wye Sale 2016

The sale at Ross on Wye included a few highlights which helped momentum in the female section resulting in high clearance rates.  The rams were good to find homes with buyers prepared to pay over 500gns for those picked out.

There were not many aged ewes but they all found homes.  AW Hughes, Garndolbenmaen topped the section selling four year olds for £88/head to Ben Jones, Ystrad Owen.

The shearling ewe section saw a 90% clearance.  D Steen, Lockerbie topped the section when selling the first pen into the ring, the pen of 15 sold for £210/head to Conan Mullard-Davies, Bishops Castle.  Next was E & L Thomas, St Clears who sold a pen of seven for £188/head to TD & JML Rees, Llangadog.  There were two pens sold for £180/head.  First JA &R Geldard & Sons, Kendal sold a pen of five to Brent Bowdler. Littledean.  HM Wells, Cardigan sold a pen of 10 to JC Mathias, Swansea.  Many pens sold for £135 to £165 with a handful realising over £170.  It was noted that breeders were batching their sheep into larger pens (i.e. 10, 15 and 20).  The auctioneers noted that these larger groups seemed easier to sell.

The smaller entry of ewe lambs could be the cause of the better clearance rate with 92% sold.  Colin Price, Brecon saw the best trade when he realised £128/head for his 2nd prize pen of 5 which sold to Jane Morris, Presteigne.  Colin then sold his 1st prize pen of ten for £115/head to JM & CE Mitchell, Tewkesbury.  C & R Bowen, Haverfordwest sold their 2nd prize pen of ten also for £115/head to AJ Jones & Son, Dingestow.  There were two pens which realised £112/head.  First DW & CF Morris, St Clears sold to Nick Hodgetts, Whittongton then Phyl Hale, Kents Green sold her 1st prize pen to VC Goodman, Lydbrook.  Eight pens in total realised £100/head and over.  Tupping lambs easily reached £90.  There were many pens in the £90’s.

The first two thirds of the section found most rams were easily finding bids.  The latter third of the sale as the ring emptied saw those rams not picked out struggling to find bids in the ring although some were booked through after the sale.  Once again Derek Steen, Lockerbie topped the section with a Ballylinney Ram and a grandson of Lluest Commando.  Selling for 2200gns he found a home with TD & JML Rees, Llangadog.

Next at 2000gns was Wraycastle Edwaldo from JA & R Geldard & Sons, Kendal.  Bred from a Laga Farms ram he found a home with E & D Jones, Machynlleth.  E & D Jones had earlier sold a Goldies son, Lluest Eccentric for 1550gns to Edward Collins, Leominster.
