Lleyn Sheep Society Annual Sale at Ruthin Mart 2016

The sun was shining and enthusiasm was in the air at Ruthin this year.  There were plenty of buyers present for females and it set off well with the non MVA section seeing a top of £130/head for shearling ewes from Tudor Mars Jones, Dinbych which were bought by KS & NL Armstrong, Denbigh.

In the MVA section the older ewes set a very firm trade when a pen of twelve three year olds from WJ & DJ Williams, Pwllheli sold for £154/head to DE Ewart, Brampton.  Messrs Williams also sold two pens of ten four year olds for £152/head and £146/head to ET Pugh, Bala.  The same buyer then purchased ten four year olds from AW Hughes, Garndolbenmaen for £140/head.

Next saw the shearling ewes which initially set off cautiously but trade lifted once it became apparent that some buyers wanted numbers and it remained solid for most of the section.  The highlight came from Dewi Ellis, Pentrefoelas who sold a pen of five for £330/head to C & A Kennedy, Co Antrim who were buying over the phone.  This pen of shearlings had been crowned champion pen at the National Lleyn Sheep Competition held alongside the Livestock Event in July.  Next saw DN Bennett & Son, Meifod sell the second prize pen of ten for £250/head to N Legge, Leominster.  This was followed by JK Goldie, Dumfries selling the third prize pen of five for £230/head to R Lewis, Neath.  The same buyer bought the champion pen of five from JF Robinson & Sons, Church Stretton for £185/head.
