Ewe with respected maternal traits
There was a quality show of females at Ruthin today with plenty of choice across the board for buyers, senior ewes and ewe lambs saw the best clearance rates of the day at 100% and 97% respectively. Rams also saw buyers able to pick and choose with those picked out selling well.
The senior ewe section was topped by DW Ellis, Pentrfoelas, when he sold a pen of eight five-year olds for £148/head to DI Jones, Llanfwrog. AW Davies, Pwllhelli sold nine three-year olds for £140/head to EG Rees, Abergele. DJ Steen, Dumfries sold eight two-year olds for £140/head to C Grindey, Macclesfield.
The shearling ewe section was topped by the first pen into the ring from JK Goldie, Ruthwell. This pen of five sold for £300/head to Peter Robinson, Naas, Ireland who was bidding over the phone. Messrs H Goldie sold to the same buyer his pen of five for £190/head. The second prize pen of five from E & D Jones, Machynlleth sold for £265/head to P & S Eckett, Sturninster. The champion pen from HM Wells, Cardigan having been passed in the ring changed hands for £200/head after when taken home by D & B Vaughan, Tufton. L Organ showed the first prize pen of 10 shearling ewes which went on to sell for £145/head to E Dodgeson, Kendal.
The first two thirds of the ballot saw most pens getting away at £140-£148 with buyers happy to take home some great quality for these reasonable prices. Ewes were being purchased for registered breeding, commercial use and for use as embryo recipient carriers in pedigree terminal flocks.
Ewe lambs saw a lifted confidence as the ringside filled up again. Many described as ‘running lambs’ most found homes easily at £80-£95/head. The champion pen from DW & CF Morris, Carmarthen sold for the top price of £128/head to AG Selway, Dorset. Three pens sold at £100/head to Chwilog Fawr Cyf, Pwlleli. These pens came from Farmstock Genetics, Selkirk, WJ & DJ Williams, Pwllhelli and A & G Hughes, Clynnogfawr.
The Champion Ram held his own taking the top price of the day. A Lluest (00599/1810025) shearling ramsired by Wraycastle Edwaldo. Sold by E & D Jones, Machynlleth, he was purchased for 3100gns by Hamish Goldie, Ruthwell. HM Wells sold Rowelen Howard (00575/1801280) sired by Lochar Firefly for 2000gns. He had stood third in the show the night before as well as being placed at the Royal Welsh. He was taken home by judge James Dugdale, Settle. WJ & DD Williams, Pwllhelli sold a Steen sired Tacho (00350/1804537) ram for 1700gns to C Lewis, Caersws and John Morton, Penith. Three rams made the 1000gns mark, these came from AW Davies, C Lewis & E & D Jones.
