Ewe with respected maternal traits
Today’s sale saw very-hot demand with prices to match. Buyers had come from far and wide for sheep and as each section in the females went through, they appeared to get dearer. All females except one pen of 5 shearling ewes found new homes. The rams also saw plenty of buyers with 47 of the 50 leaving with new owners. The breeders had done their work and put quality in the ring and the buyers rewarded them.
The shearling ewes topped at £280/head for JA & R Geldard & Sons who had travelled down from Kendal. They sold another pen at £205/head and both pens were bought by D Edwards, Gloucester. Local consigners DN Bennett & Son, Meifod sold their top pen at £250/head to SM Bebb, Oswestry. E & D Jones, Machynlleth sold a pen at £240/head to Lipley Beltex, Market Drayton. WJ & DJ William, Pwllheli sold a pen of seven for £202/head to C Baxter, Peterbrough. Nine pens realised £200 and above. Nothing sold for under £160 with many changing hands around £170-180.
Although ewe lambs set off hesitant, they soon gathered momentum with small lambs looking pricey towards the end. WJ & DJ Williams sold the top price of £145/head to JL Davies, Llandrindod Wells. Mr Williams sold his next pen at £134/head to Chwilog Fawr Ltd, Pwllheli. C Lewis, Caersws sold a pen of ten for £142/head to M Williams, Pwllheli. P Knowles from Kendal got two pens away at £135/head, first to J Davies, Brierley Hill and then AL & AR Wolfe, Leicester. J Morton from Penrith had a large run at the end of the sale but still saw prices up to £133/head.
Following the already numerous top prices across the sales this year, E & D Jones, Machynlleth did it again with a Lluest Ram (01299/1714254) sired by Forts Gold Card. Bought by A Naylor, Cowbridge for 3200gns. Messrs Jones also sold a Wraycastle Edwards sired ram for 850gns and a Southam Gunner son for 900gns. AW Davies, Pwllheli sold Bronallt Iw (00050/1905783) sired by a homebred ram for 1100gns to J Coles, Llandovery. L Organ, Llandysul sold Southam Inspector (00306/1902776) sired by Brynowen Geezer for 900gns to Davies Bros, Craven Arms. The rams saw a nice level trade with many rams selling from 450-600gns, especially in the first two thirds of the sale.
