Ross on Wye Sale 2022

On travelling to Ross on Wye expectations were levelled when seeing the dry conditions and lack of grass in the surrounding areas..  Many noting no rain for many months.  The droughty conditions effecting the quality of some sheep whilst also affecting buying decisions.  However quality female sheep were selected with decent prices seen.  Rams saw a positive demand with only 5 of the 68 unsold.  The ring remained busy until the last ram through the ring with some buyers not completing their shopping list hence looking to attend further sales.

Senior ewes saw a sparky start with P & C Andrews, Stourbridge sell two year olds for £190/head to CG Ball, Abergaven. N Hodgetts, Whittington sold three year olds for £130/head to L Alexander, Staunton.  Messrs Hodgetts & Messrs Rees both sold five year olds and 4 year olds at £120/head.

Shearling ewes were topped in the ring by C & R Bowen, Haverfordwest when selling the 1st prize pen of 10 for £210/head to Penrice Estate, Swansea.  JA & R Geldard & Sons travelled down from Kendal and sold their 2nd prize pen of five for £210/head to the same buyer.  New breeders the James Family, Bridgenorth had a successful day selling a pen at £202/head to A & R Golledge, Hardwicke.  The top price of the section was achieved by E & D Jones, Machynlleth who accepted £220/head outside the ring with five going to F Brewer, Exeter and one travelling to Evesham with S Gunn & S Lucas.

Those stronger selected pens were making £180-£200.  There were some slightly lesser pens which with some rain and better going would go forward changing hands for £140-£170.

There were a few pens of tupping lambs but many more running type lambs probably a result of the summer.  There were lambs that on a change of ground would thrive and go on.  AW Davies, Nefyn topped the section with his 2nd prize pen selling for £160/head to A Smith, Kyre.  Next G & RM Roobottom, Rugeley sold a pen at £140/head to A Hill, Rowleston.  C Price, Brecon and T & B Fort, Keighley both sold pens at £135/head.

With the buoyant fat/store trades in mind lambs, vendors were reluctant to accept under the £100 mark.

The ram section saw 15 rams hit 1000gns plus.  Many bidders were happy to give 400-800gns.   The highlight came from the pen of JA & R Geldard, Kendal.  The Wraycastle Ram (00621/2121001) sired by a Steen ram sold for 3000gns to Manor Farm East Marden, Chichester.   In the same pen by the same sire, another Wraycastle ram (00621/2121034) sold for 1600gns to WH Butcher & Son, Towcester.  T & B Fort, Keighley sold Brightonhouse Kingsman (01299/2125698) by Netherton Injector for 1600gns to E & D Jones, Machynlleth.
