2026 cirencester Sale Report

We held the inaugural sale of Lleyn sheep at Cirencester Livestock Market and it had certainly attracted the attention of many individuals with a substantial crowd in attendance surrounding the ring. On travelling to Cirencester it was a relief to see ground conditions were recovering well after the drought conditions over the summer. There was a strong breeder and commercial customer base for ewes with a handful of new faces to the Society with some individuals purchasing foundation females and rams to set up new flocks.

The Shearling ewes had a flying trade with quality breeding females reaching £400/head and rams also saw a positive demand seeing 74% off to new homes. The trade remined strong and the ring busy until the last ram was through the ring. Aged ewes were again first into the ring to start the sale with P & C Andrews, Stourbridge selling two year olds for £220/head to D & S Searle, Cornwall and S Lewis, Pembrokeshire selling his three years olds for £200/head to S Collett, Cheltenham.

Shearling ewes saw an electric trade and were topped in the ring by H M Wells, Ferwig with their 1^st prize pen of 5 reaching £400/head to fellow breeders from Wales A Rees, Ammanford. The second highest price of the day came from Harpers Holding Ltd with their first pen of 5 in the ring reaching £360/head and sold to new breeders I McFarlane, Hampshire who also bought Twose Farms Ltd.’s pen at £355/head.

The ewes on offer were presented very well from all vendors, seeing buyers compete and having to ‘bid-up’ for their chosen pens at the sale. The more commercial type shearlings were changing hands for £250-£280. Over 22 pens reached in excess of the £300/head at the sale levelling out at an average of £298/head.

The ewe lambs saw a very hard days trading with this year’s summer weather playing a part with buyers decisions on the day. A handful of pens were sold with the lambs reaching £160/head for C Price, Brecon selling to E & A Farming, Presteigne and again reaching the same money was P & S Eckett and Manor Farm East Marden with their lambs off to the same buyer JW Timbs, Charlbury. With the buoyant prime and store trades in mind many vendors were reluctant to accept the price in the ring for the bigger tupping lambs on the day.

Being in a new area in the Midlands the ram section saw 13 rams hit 900gns plus with many bidders were happy to give 500-800gns for quality examples of the breed. The top price of the day came from L Organ, Llandysul with Southam Osprey (00306/2504221) sired by Southam Napoleon selling for 1550gns to Harper Holdings Ltd, Devon. JA & R Geldard sold their 6 rams to average 1238gns with their best Wraycastle ram (00621/2527891) sired by a Tacho ram and selling for 1480gns to M Miller, Dorset. T & B Fort were again in the money for their ram Brightonhouse Orlando (01299/2530228) sired by Goldies Inspiration and selling again for 1480gns G Meyrick & Sons, Chipping Norton.
