2026 ruthin Sale Report

The 2026 annual sale at Ruthin saw a strong demand throughout the female section with a full ring of buyers achieving a clearance rate of 92%. There was a lively and competitive atmosphere around the ring with plenty of interest from both pedigree and commercial breeders, with buyers keen to secure quality Lleyn females.

Strating the day in the Non-MV section with one pen of aged ewes were forward on the day of the sale, selling at £200/head to E & A Farming, Presteigne. Onto the Shearling Ewes with Dewi Wyn Ellis into the ring with his Reserve Champion females and 1^st prize individual Shearling Ewe. After some fierce bidding around the ring from many perspective purchasers, these were knocked down at £300/head to Messrs Hughes, Pwllheli, who also secured Mr Ellis’s next pen at the same money.

Starting the MV section with a quality run of Shearling ewes who had also been in the prizes in the Pre-Sale Show was A W Davies with his 3^rd prize pen of 10 Shearling Ewes reaching £330/head selling to D & S Searle, Cornwall, and a further two pens reaching £320 and £300/head. The demand for females continued throughout the sale regular vendors H M Wells securing this year’s top price and venue record for their pen of 10 Shearling Ewes selling at £400/head to fellow breeder R J Irwin who had travelled to the sale from Devon.

Mr Irwin also purchased the 1^st prize pen of 10 Shearling Ewes from WJ & DJ Williams for £340/head, with Mr Williams also selling a pen of 5 at £360/head to AG Selway in Dorset. E & D Jones also secured the same money of £360/head with their pen of Shearling Ewes selling to MJ Wells & Son from Derbyshire.

A credit must go to all vendors in the Shearling Ewe section as the quality on offer for purchasers was exceptional, with vendors seeing a firm trade. Over thirty pens sold in excess of the £290/head at this year’s sale seeing the average rise £45/head compared to the previous year.

The ewe lambs were topped by Champions of the pre-sale show, a pen of five from JA & R Geldard & Sons. These stylish girls caught the eye of Rhys Jones, Ynys Mon who secured them at £260/head and also purchased their next pen at £210/head. AW Davies also sold a pen of five for £225/head to Sue Collett from Cheltenham, who also secured pens from Twose Farms Ltd at £210/head and WJ & DJ Williams at £205/head twice. Smaller lambs saw plenty of demand with many pens changing hands from £150 to £180.

In the ram section it was the prize-winning stock that came into the spotlight, with top price of the day of 3000gns coming from Lionel Organ with his pre-sale show Reserve Champion Southam Oscar (00360/2504222) sired by Southam Napoleon selling to the show judges and breeders JA & R Geldard & Sons, Kendal. The Geldard family also secured the pre-sale show Champion from T & B Fort Fort Owen (01656/2530652) by Brightonhouse Master Craftsman for 2400gns. The next top price of the day came from the Fort families Brightonhouse flock, with Brightonhouse Olympic Star (01299/2530123) sired by Lluest ram (00599/2011824) and selling away at 2000gns to WW & D Boow, Millom. Travelling down from Yorkshire was Messrs H & M Dugdale & Son who secured 1850gns for Borrins Onslaught (01228/2526568), sired by another Lluest ram (00599/2011950), he was snapped up by fellow breeders Manor Farm East Marden.

Strong Rams for both pedigree and commercial breeding saw a good trade throughout with the later part of the sale seeing many of the leading prices. An 81% clearance was achieved with 23 rams exceeding 1000gns and many of the commercial ram seeing a trade between 600 - 850gns.
