Lleyn Sheep Society AGM 2025 South Wales
Cymdeithas Defaid Lleyn Sheep Society 2025 AGM
31ST October -2nd November 2025
Cliff Hotel, Gwbert, Ceredigion
The 2025 Lleyn Sheep Society AGM was hosted by the South Wales Lleyn Sheep Breeders Club at the Cliff Hotel, Ferwig.
A large number met on Friday for the first of the farm visits to Flock 575 of Roger & Helen Wells, Ferwig. Roger & Helen Wells are the current Royal Welsh Champions winning the 2025 show with their shearling ram.
They started keeping Lleyn in 1989 with six ewe lambs and now run a flock of 80 pedigree ewes. They are continually at the top in both the show ring and the sale ring.
We were treated to a delicious lunch prepared by Helen and family, eating it in the lambing shed with pens of ram lambs, ewe lambs and a stock judging competition alongside us. Roger took us for a walk around the ewes and stock rams before returning to the shed for yet more food.
We then moved to the Cliff hotel for the council meeting followed by a meal in the Carreg restaurant.
The next morning after as delicious breakfast we boarded the bus for the Twose family of Flock 552. We took the scenic route, stopping on top of the Preseli mountains to admire the view and the blue sky. Helen Wells was the tour guide as we drove to Maenhir.
At Maenhir the heavens opened and closed as we got on three trailers for a trip around the farm. The ewes were located in paddocks in their tupping groups and Richard Twose talked us around the various groups. We also saw some of the in-calf heifers and some of the crops being grown form the sheep and cattle.
Richard and Jennifer Twose also began keeping Lleyn in 1989 and travel the length and breadth of the country to sell their Lleyn and are often in the prizes at both the show ring and the pre-sale shows. They run a flock of 280 -300 ewes as well as lambing many of their ewe lambs.
We returned to the farmyard to look at the milking cows , ewe lambs and ram lambs before being treated to another delicious lunch at Becws Bets, the on-farm café. There was a vet quiz and some Hereford stock judging to keep everyone busy and a goody bag from AF to take home.
The bus took some members into the town of Cardigan for a walk around whilst others returned to the Cliff Hotel to prepare for the AGM, or to visit the Spa.
A packed room met for the AGM as John Geldard was appointed President and Wallce McCurdie Vice-President. Wynne Davies stepped down as President after nine years and was a made a life member to show the Society’s appreciation for his dedication. At the AGM the cup presentations were made, as well as the certificates for the Royal Show Judges.
A council meeting followed, and Arfon Hughes was appointed Chairman of the Society with Richard Twose as Vice- Chairman and David Knowles as Treasurer.
Following the AGM guests were entertained with some harp music from Branwen Vaughan. Over a 100 attended the dinner that followed in the Ballroom where Kathryn Dick was presented with flowers and membership of the Society to thank her for her work over the last two and a half years. Bethan Vaughan, outgoing Chairman was also presented with flowers and a gift for her work on behalf of the Society for the last three years.
After the dinner an auction was held of the table centres, made by Helen Wells, and a pencil sketch by club member Alaw Haf James. Money from the auction and a few games will be donated to Sands Charity , the Uk’s leading pregnancy and baby loss charity. The total sum raised was in excess of £1,300 with the final figure to be confirmed.
The evening continued with dancing to local band Rocanna.
