2025 Ruthin Sale Report
Trade was nothing short of electric at the annual Ruthin Society Sale, where prices for shearling ewes soared to heights of £320 per head for a pen of 5 from H M Wells, Glaneiri, Ferwig, Cardigan.
Securing these leading ladies was H G Thomas, Carmarthenshire.
The same home also produced a pen of 5 shearlings which sold for £290 per head to R Jones, Abergele.
Just behind on £310 per head was the second prize pen of 5 shearling ewes from H Goldie, Southbower Houses, Ruthwell, Dumfries. They were knocked down to G Rowlands, Gwynedd.
Moments later, another pen from Mr Goldie attained £300 per head and headed home with Chwilog Farw Cyf, Gwynedd.
The pre-sale show champion pen of females from D T Jones, Bryn Rhydd, Edern, Pwllheli secured a top of £305 per head. These were sold to O Powell, Grinshill.
Two pens of 5 shearling ewes from J K Goldie, Southbower Houses, Ruthwell, Dumfries made £295 and £290 per head. Each were sold to G Jones, Aberdaron and H Dean, York, respectively.
In the ewe lamb section, trade reached a top of £255 for the first prize pen of 5 from Twose Farms Ltd, Maen Hir, Login, Whitland. Snapping up this topper of a pen was A James, Ceredigion.
The same home produced another pen of 8, this time selling to A W Hughes, Gadlys, Dinas, Caernarfon for £180 per head.
A W Davies, Bronallt, Morfa Nefyn sold his best pen of 5 ewe lambs for £170 to local buyers TJ & MF Faire, Ruthin, whilst WJ & DJ Williams, Bodtacho Ddu, Nefyn was just behind with his pen of 5 lambs attaining £165. They sold to WJ & DJ Stone Agriculture, Ruthin.
The same buyer then secured a pen of 8 ewe lambs from Twose Farms Ltd for £165 per head.
I & A Jones, Pen-y-Bryn, Betws-yn-Rhos, Abergele achieved a top price of £160 for their pen of 5 ewe lambs, which sold to P W Jones, Wrexham.
RV & GE Jones, Pentre Farm, Rhosymadoc, Ruabon matched that price of £160 with their pen of 5 ewe lambs heading home with J Percival, Cheshire.
Rams witnessed one of the best trades of the day where no fewer than 21 lots attained four figures, with the section levelling out at 1108.44gns for 53 sold.
It was a memorable afternoon for the Jones family, Lluest Wen, Comins Coch, Machynlleth who led the section with their Lluest ram (00599/2415688) making 5500gns. Sired by Whitlaw Landmark (00983/2218748) and out of a home-bred ewe, this boy was knocked down to H Goldie, buying for his Lochar flock.
The same home produced another Lluest ram (00599/2415675) which sold for 2400gns to J G Morton, Bank Hall, Penrith. He was another son of Whitlaw Landmark.
WJ & DJ Williams were next in the trade stakes with their Tacho entry (00350/2409101) securing a top of 3600gns. Out of a home-bred ewe and by the stock sire (02339/2202352), he headed home to join R H T Williams, Gwynedd.
Travelling down from Settle, Yorkshire was J H Dugdale, who secured their best of 2600gns for Borrins Nix (01228/2425910). Sired by (01158/2209849), he was snapped up by A James.
Two rams from H M Wells secured four figures, the first being Rowelen Nelson (00575/2402244) making 2300gns. No stranger to the show ring having stood second in the shearling ram class at this year’s RWAS, he is a son of (00621/2222475) and was knocked down to WH & IM Butcher, Taylors Farm, Towcester.
The second from H M Wells, Rowelen Noah (00575/2402292) sold for 2000gns to P & S Eckett, Minster House. Out of the same sire, he stood champion at this year’s RWAS.
The pre-sale show male champion, Fort Novak (01299/2427571) from T & B Fort, Brighton House Farm, Whitley Head, Steeton achieved a top bid of 2100gns. Out of a home-bred ewe and sired by (01158/1906836), he caught the eye of the pre-sale show judges, E & D Jones, who will use him on their Lluest flock.
