Roscommon Sale 2023

Lleyn breeders enjoyed another successful sale in Rosscommon with plenty of both commercial and pedigree buyers present around the ring, resulting in only three pens of ewe lambs being unsold.

Trade remained strong throughout the sale of rams with many making good money. Leading the sale of rams at €1360 was Dillagh Lancelot (02419/222614A) from David Beattie, Ballinagh, Co. Cavan.

This triplet-born ram is sired by Quarrymount Jupiter, out of a home-bred ewe and headed home with G Keogh, Winestown, Dublin.

Another from the Dillagh pen went under the hammer at €1140, this time for Dillagh Lionel (02419/222624B). Sired by the stock ram (02419/201155E), he sold to S Ryan, Bonnybrook, Thomastown.

A third and final ram from David, Dillagh Louis (02419/222622G) was knocked down at €710 to E Maguire, Rockviewm Co. Cavan. He is another by Quarrymount Jupiter.

Nest in the trade stakes making €1280 was Cooley Levi (01850/223218E) from David Oliver, Earlsquarter, Dundalk. A son of Eastwood and out of one of the flock’s best breeding ewes, he headed home with JF Godfrey, Churchground, Kilgarvan.

Patrick Bobbett’s Juliasdale Lead (02007/220999G) from Juliasdale Organic Farm, Co. Dublin sold his best for €700. Out of the stock ram (00809/1508856), he was snapped up by David Beattie, with the section levelling at €590.

Shearling ewes enjoyed a buoyant trade with trade reaching a top of €315 per head for a pen of five from Fergal Leonard Garbally, Blueball, Tullamore, Co Offaly. They sold to Messrs Clifford, Arvagh, Co. Cavan.

David Beattie sold his best pen of five for €300 per head to D Dunne, Kilnacross, Redhills, who also purchased a pen from the same home at €295.

The same buyer forked out a further €300 per head for a pen of 5 from W Oliver, Earsquarter.

Matching that price was a pen of five from Brian Matthews, Quarrymount House, Killeigh, Co. Offaly which went under the hammer at €295 when selling to O Barry, Seafield, Duncormick.

Gearoid O’Connor, Cams, Ballymote Co Sligo was next in the money when selling his lead pen for 295 per head to R Paton, Ballybay, with the section levelling at €227.50.

Ewe lambs soared to €175 per head, to cash in at €124.50 with the sale being led by Pat Bobbett with a pen of 5 selling to C Dowling, Co. Roscommon.

Two pens reached the €170 mark the first being Mr & Mrs R.B. and M.H. Brummitt, Shemagh, Dromard, Co Sligo who’s pen of 5 headed home with J Connolly, Broomfield, Co. Monaghan.

The second €170 price mark came from David Beattie’s who sold his best pen of 5 to G Guinan, Derrooley, Tullamore.

William Oliver’s pen of 5 ewe lambs attained a top of €165 per head and went under the hammer to J Coen, Co. Galway.

Matching that price was Padraig Geraghty, Feirm Luchair Moher, Glenamaddy, Castlerea, Co Galway who sold his best pen to H McDonald, Tullamore.
