2023 Lleyn Flock Open Days

Southern Ireland Lleyn Breeders Cub

Date: Saturday 15th July, 12.30pm

Host: Alan McDonald, Ormston House, Killeigh, Co. Offaly Flock 01852

A McDonald photo.jpgAlan and his wife Aoife run a flock of 120 registered Lleyn ewes and a herd of 16 suckler cows as well as both working full time. Ewes are lambed indoors in late February. All sheep are performance recorded under Sheep Ireland. Ewe lambs are retained and sold as shearling ewes through the Society sale.

Alan certainly has impressive stock, an excellent yard set up and his grassland management skills are indeed impressive. So much so in fact that Alan is willing to show it all off this year by hosting the Southern Ireland Lleyn Breed Open Day.

West Country Lleyn Breeders Club

Date: Sunday 23rd July

Host: GK Griffin & Son, Heathfield Farm , St Dominick , Saltash, PL126RR

WC Photo.jpgGeorge and his son Dominic farm 440 acres in the Tamar Valley , they keep 100 South Devon suckler cows and a flock of 250 Lleyn ewes with 50 ewe lambs bred each year.  All stock is finished on the farm with some of the beef and lamb going through their farm shop.

The Lleyn flock was created four years ago with the purchase of Boakley females from Reuben Saunders, the aim being to improve the health status of the sheep farmed. Females and rams were purchased for two years, the flock was then closed and replacements reared on the farm. All male lambs are finished with excellent growth and grading figures, ewe lambs are bred for three weeks and then retained if pregnant, 80% pregnancy is being achieved.  The farm is joining a Countryside Stewardship Scheme and is using clovers and GS4 mixes to improve performance and reduce the use of fertilizers.

Farm walk will start at 2pm.  To book a place, contact Club's Secretary: Cathy Evans on 07787610507 or lleyn150@gmail.com
